7 Things

Let’s start with the bad news.

1) Terrorist shootings at the Al Noor mosque and Linwood mosque in Christchurch, NZ.

No longer can we sit quietly in prayer and feel 100% safe.

Have you imagined yourself, sitting in your church, praying quietly, or exchanging a sign of peace when someone just comes in and begins shooting?

We don’t need guns.

2) Ontario Education announcement.

As I watched I couldnt be sure whether Lisa Thomspon was poorly informed or flat out lying.

a. Grades 9-12, jumps from an average of 22 students to 28.  And not one teacher will lose their jobs due to this strategy.  A quick calculations reveal it to be thousands.  But since we’re so bad at math, we just don’t understand.

b. All high school students to take four online classes as part of their 30 to graduate.  Unless done properly, this is just a bad idea.  A very small percentage of students complete online courses without proper resources and support.  I don’t sense the government will be pouring either in to help.

And those are just the low hanging fruit.  Going to be an interesting four years.

3) 9-1-1 free (for $45).

Our home is now at 12 days (and counting) without a 9-1-1 call. The last came with a $45 invoice for the ambulance trip.  We have now scheduled weekly fireman’s carry practices to the care to prevent such financial diversions from the hot tub fund.

4) Our drinking glasses are well-organized into structured rows by type, size and pattern.  Coffee cups are organized more like a mosh pit.

5) Leafs prepping for the playoffs with a “last goal wins” type of play.  Exciting, yes.  A far cry from the old defence first days.  I remember a favourite coach I worked with, Coach Doug, in many of our late night calls saying “Coach James – it’s so simple.  If you don’t allow any goals, you only have to score one to win.”  We were excellent defensively but had a hard time getting that one goal on many nights.

6) Had my first salmon burger last night.  WOW!  What a delightful treat!  Totally not what I was expecting.  I can’t say what I was expecting, but it was not that.  @calliboy and @emmadivito, you outdid yourselves.  Also tried tindora for the first time – expertly prepared by @raine.adams

7)  OK, so this was weird.

About 18 months ago, Raine and I were driving to L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland.  We slowed and stopped when we saw a smashed card on the side of the road.  It looked like it had hit a moose.  We took a couple of photos, and drove on.  A bit up the road there was a long, dark red stain on the highway.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, I received a private message on Instagram.

“Hey buddy, I have a question for you.”

“Shoot”, I replied.

“My sister was wondering why you posted a photo of her car on your profile.”

What?

Holy Moly.  Shortly after, his sister added her comments on the photo detailing their moose encounter…and happy to be alive.

Yes, happy to be alive.
